It picked up from what the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) had formulated in 2001. SDGs are included in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by the UN Summit in September 2015.

The international goal covers the period from 2016 to 2030.  The 17 goals and 169 targets are in order to make a more sustainable world happens. Being the universal goals, the SDGs are for developing countries as well as developed countries. And Japan has been actively working on them.
